Bartholomeus Metallbau

Bartholomeus Metallbau GmbH is a medium-sized metal construction company with around 65 employees, based in Bergen, Bavaria. The company specializes in the planning, manufacturing, and installation of lightweight metal and glass façades, aluminum windows and doors, as well as fire-rated doors made of steel and aluminum.

A key business segment is project construction, where Bartholomeus Metallbau collaborates with public-sector and commercial clients. For Managing Director Werner Bartholomeus, digitalized processes are essential to handle these projects efficiently and transparently. The company has been using Logikal since 2008. Additional software solutions are also in use, such as ERplus and Athena, which can be seamlessly integrated with Logikal via interfaces.

Everything Works Seamlessly Together

Using the example of constructing a large sports and leisure facility, Werner Bartholomeus explains typical processes. Cost estimation is carried out using two programs—ERplus and Logikal—which work together smoothly via an interface. “The pure element calculation then takes place in Logikal,” he adds. The customer then receives the quotation. “The technical order processing and element planning are then carried out in AutoCAD with Athena. There is an interface to Logikal, where elements can be transferred so that we can generate sections and create our building connections,” Werner Bartholomeus continues. The drawings are then sent to the architectural firm for approval. Once approved, both the architect’s approval drawings and the company’s own plans are stored as PDF files in a predefined folder structure. These plans are later transferred into digital production.

Paperless, Practical, Efficient – Digital Production with Logikal MES

Eight Logikal MES terminals are installed in the production facility. Switching to paperless production was a major step, explains Werner Bartholomeus. Information is sent directly from Logikal to the individual terminals, where each employee has all the data needed to process the respective elements and orders. This saves considerable time and unnecessary movement, as confirmed by the workshop staff. All information is centrally stored in one system, eliminating the need to search for paperwork.

From the office, the workshop manager can view all workstations and their respective progress at any time via a dashboard. There is no longer any need to check in with employees individually at the end of the day—the status is clearly displayed as a percentage.

Enhancing Quality and Safety with MES

This level of transparency, combined with clearly defined processes, also results in improved quality and safety. Particular emphasis is placed on fire protection, CE marking, and in-house production control (FPC).

Bartholomeus has divided FPC into general production control and a specific control process for external applications, which is required for fire protection compliance. At each workstation, the necessary checks are automatically prompted and completed as part of the workflow. This consistency minimizes errors and ensures a reliable routine in quality control.

Delivering Complex Projects with Confidence Using Logikal and Logikal MES

The sports and leisure facility is an impressive example of how digital solutions simplify the execution of complex construction projects. In this case, the building is characterized by numerous corners, offsets, and structural interfaces that are not immediately apparent from the plans. According to Werner Bartholomeus, the contract covered the entire building envelope, with the exception of the flat roof waterproofing. The scope of work included, for example, parapets, façade cladding, the complete external glazing including soffits beneath canopies, as well as sun shading systems and an awning installation in the outdoor pool area.

For this specific project, the company’s in-house production share was around 60 percent. The interaction between the software solutions contributed significantly to the project’s success. “To build such a building without software, without any connection between the programs, would make it impossible to realise with our personnel capacities,” emphasizes Werner Bartholomeus. This project-based nature is also what makes metal construction so distinctive for him: “Every project is individual and each presents a new challenge.”
